NHRA Racing Champ and his US Army buddies

Speed Raceway Cinnaminson, one of the east coast’s largest indoor, electric go kart racing facilities located in South Jersey had a special visitor this past Friday night. Eight-time NHRA Champion and Top Fuel drag racer Tony Schumacher came by to sign autographs, take pictures with guests and race against a few lucky fans. The event was sponsored by the U.S. Army Recruiting Center in Cherry Hill, NJ and two great local radio stations.

Wanna Race Like a Champ?

Here are some pro tips for great fun and awesome lap times when you visit our facility.

  1. Enjoy yourself! First and foremost, go kart racing is FUN. No matter what your experience level is, whether you’re a first-timer or an eight-time NHRA Champion, take a few deep breaths, relax and focus on having a good time. For most racers, getting overly stressed about a race before you start can lead to poor performance.
  2. Learn the right racing line. Now that you are determined to have fun, the best thing you can do for a great lap time is learning the correct racing line for that particular track. On each course and through each turn there is a best line that allows a racer to take the corners in the fastest possible way. If you are a beginner, try a few different lines during your race. You will notice that the best line is the one in which using all of the available space on the track, your car can travel in a straighter line and travel faster before experiencing any sort of slip, braking or course correction.
  3. Avoid hitting the brakes hard. Remember, these are electric go karts and in most instances you can slow your kart to the appropriate speed just by removing your foot from the accelerator (gas pedal). For sharper turns, ease off the accelerator before the turn, not while you are turning. By doing this, you can take the corner smoother and if on the correct racing line, you’ll be able to increase your speed and build momentum on the back half of the turn. As you come out of the turn, you’ll be at top speed much quicker.
  4. Practice, practice, practice. Unfortunately, like with most things in life, the only way to get really good is to practice. Lucky for you, go karting is an adrenaline-filled adventure worth doing more than once. We didn’t ask him, but it’s probably safe to say that Tony loves his life and his career. It’s better than having to practice chopsticks on a piano for hours on end. No offense intended to you musicians out there.

So next time you’re at the track, follow these guidelines and watch your time head to the top of the leaderboard.
