Become the Champion of the Track with Our Go-Kart Racing Tips

November 20th, 2019

Few experiences feel as exhilarating as the thrill of winning a go-kart race — the team at Speed Raceway would know. As the leading place for birthday parties in the Philadelphia area, we see a lot of track champions on a day-to-day basis. Yet, we still believe that whether you’re a go-karting master or you’re still learning the track, everyone can benefit from a few tips on how to become a better racer.

Lean back and get comfortable: If your posture is stiff and awkward, your driving will be as well. When you get behind the wheel, take time to adjust the seat for maximum comfort and correct posture. This is important in helping you keep the correct form while driving. The majority of drivers feel inclined to lean forward, but shifting your weight to the front of your kart will only serve to slow you down. So just sit back and relax.

Just keep driving: Any NASCAR driver would be happy to tell you the importance of maintaining your momentum. Look ahead at the track to anticipate your next move to avoid unnecessary braking. If you encounter a turn, use wide lines, so you don’t lose much speed. It’s important to keep your speed steady and your steering smooth, so your kart can sail ahead.

Take a break: It might seem counterintuitive, but your best bet for getting ahead is to avoid braking on turns. Although it looks cool in the movies, sliding your vehicle can cause the tires to lose traction quicker, which will end up slowing you down. If you need to brake, do so while you’re driving in a straight line, then take a wide arc while turning.

Follow the leader: The best go-kart drivers are experienced and knowledgeable about the track. If you want to win, follow the leader. Study their techniques for maneuvering around the track, then try to duplicate them. If you are following, make sure you still keep a safe distance until you see an opportunity to pass them.

One pedal at a time: Just like driving a real car, you don’t want to use both your feet simultaneously. Not only will that cause you to slow down and fall behind, but it could also cause the engine to shut down. You won’t win if you’re not even a part of the race.

Let go and have fun: Let go of any negative feelings, like stress and anxiety, that can bog you down and make you an unsafe driver. Being relaxed behind the wheel will help all of these tips fall into place.

If you’re looking to schedule a team-building party in the Philadelphia area, or you’re simply ready to become the champion of the track, we challenge you to come down to Speed Raceway and show us your best moves. We encourage you to bring your friends, family, or coworkers! Trust us when we say that you won’t regret showing off your new go-kart skills.
